UK implements double hull rules for oil tankers

Two Orders paving the way for the UK to implement international rules on oil pollution and garbage disposal from ships were approved by Parliament during May.

The Orders were needed to allow regulations to be made by the UK to give effect to a series of amendments to the global 1973/78 MARPOL Convention on the prevention of pollution from ships agreed within the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Several of the amendments were adopted following the Exxon Valdez oil pollution disaster in Alaska (ENDS Report 206, p 39
