  • The problem of removing heavy metals from industrial liquid discharges without using alum or lime for precipitation is to be tackled in a joint £250 000 project between AEA Technology in Dounreay and Pall Process Filtration of Portsmouth, with some funding from the Government's Environmental Technology Innovation Scheme (ETIS). A pilot plant to test the technology which combines chemical conditioning of the waste streams with filtration is to be built at the site of the Pasminco
    smelter at Avonmouth.
