  • The Secretary of State for the Environment, John Gummer, has given the go-ahead for a £3m clinical waste incinerator planned by UK Waste Management, a joint venture between Wessex Water and Waste Management International, at Knowsley Industrial Park in Kirkby, near Liverpool. Mr Gummer overturned an earlier refusal of planning permission by Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, despite submissions from local residents concerned about potential health effects, saying that the application of BATNEEC under the Environmental Protection Act would prevent or minimise and render harmless any releases.
