Jury still out on Responsible Care

"Don't trust us, track us" was how one chemical company once boldly invited the public to monitor its environmental performance. The Chemical Industries Association (CIA) has now published its first three-year set of data intended to assist in the tracking exercise.1 With many sites not reporting data, the odd methodological problem, and the recession affecting releases to the environment, few sensible conclusions about the effectiveness of the industry's Responsible Care programme can be drawn at this stage - but at least a start has been made.
