UK makes a slow start towards sustainable development

A low-key press conference on 21 July launched a two-month period of consultation on the Government's proposals for a UK strategy for sustainable development.1 But the Green Paper gives few pointers to the Government's thinking on how, how fast and by whom environmental damage and resource depletion might be contained. Perhaps the best that can be said about it is that it will attract fierce external criticisms which will help the Department of the Environment in its battle to win over the ranks of the unconverted in Whitehall.
