Long-awaited boost for renewable energy
A third round of financial assistance for renewable energy projects has been announced by the Government. The support scheme has been extended to Scotland and Northern Ireland for the first time, and the task of obtaining private sector investment has been eased by an extension of the subsidy for power produced by the renewables beyond the previous deadline of 1998. But competition for the subsidy is set to be fierce, and proponents of the renewables have criticised the Government for not setting more ambitious targets to boost their share of the power generation market.
