Hostile response to DoE plan to scrap air pollution controls

Proposals to repeal several old-established local authority powers to control air pollution by giving prior approval to new boilers, emission abatement equipment and chimney heights were issued by the Department of the Environment (DoE) on 1 July.1 The plan has already drawn a critical response from environmental health officers, and could also prove more costly to operators if they were forced to modify equipment after it had been installed.
