EC moves to curb maritime pollution
Proposals to introduce minimum standards for ship classification societies have been made by the European Commission as its initial response to the oil tanker disasters off Spain and the Shetlands last winter. Moves to identify environmentally sensitive areas requiring special protection from oil and chemical spills have also begun, although concrete action is unlikely until at least 1996.
