Delays continue to dog new air pollution controls

Two years after a new air pollution control system operated by local authorities was established by the Environmental Protection Act 1990, authorisations had been issued for only half the applications submitted even though they reached less than half the total expected by the Department of the Environment (DoE). Large numbers of late applications from industry have exacerbated the delays. And while most applications for existing processes are being determined within the statutory deadline, over 40% of those for new processes are not.
