Preparing a plan for the UK's packaging waste

Representatives of the packaging chain are hurriedly assembling a packaging waste management plan in response to an ultimatum from Environment Secretary John Gummer. Funding arrangements, the need for legislation to ensure that all businesses participate, and the recovery and recycling targets set for different materials are among the central issues facing the industry. Meanwhile, the Department of the Environment (DoE) appears to be rethinking its recycling target for household waste - and is also considering introducing a landfill levy on a voluntary basis to provide funds for recycling.
