The chemical industry believes it has a good tale to tell about its environmental performance - yet occasionally a story turns up which suggests otherwise. Despite the combined pressure of legislation, litigation, market forces, voluntary agreements and corporate environmental pledges, one of the USA's largest chemical works - owned by one of the world's top chemical manufacturers - has been shown to be missing attractive waste minimisation opportunities worth $15 million per year at just a handful of its processes. A vital ingredient, it seems, is still missing from the industry's commitment to improve.
