Eco-labelling proposals finalised for laundry detergents

Final proposals for eco-labelling criteria for laundry detergents have been submitted to the European Commission after three years of development. The criteria are based solely on water pollution potential and packaging, ignoring the energy-saving opportunities of some formulations. Several issues, including a proposed ban on phosphates and the use of chronic toxicity data, still have to be resolved - but a compromise appears possible.
