DoE consults on revised water quality classification

The Department of the Environment (DoE) has conducted a short consultation on draft regulations which will establish a new system of classifying water quality in England and Wales.1 The proposals include fudges which will allow non-compliant waters to appear to meet quality standards where failures are due to eutrophication, acid rain, old mineworkings or contaminated land.
