Lies, damned lies and statistics in the great water debate

The Government has embarked on a campaign to defer the implementation of the EC Directive on wastewater treatment on the grounds that it grossly underestimated what it would cost. But in fact figures which seem likely to prove almost spot-on were provided to the Government by the water industry well before the legislation was agreed. The affair is threatening yet more broken official promises to eliminate Britain's worst water pollution black spots.
