Waste licence defence succeeds in river pollution case

Smokeless fuel producer Coal Products Ltd (CPL) has been acquitted of charges of polluting the river Rother despite admitting that tars from a waste dump had leaked into the river. The case, brought by the National Rivers Authority (NRA), has shown how the possession of a waste disposal licence can be a defence against water pollution charges.
