Government increases resources on urban air quality

The Government has responded to growing concern about air pollution in Britain's cities by establishing two new advisory groups on urban air quality. The first stage in an expansion of the urban air monitoring network also began in January.

Action on urban air quality was promised in the 1990 White Paper on the environment. The UK's monitoring and policy-making capacity in this area will also have to be strengthened in response to European Commission plans to set air quality standards for a wider range of pollutants (see pp 19-22 ).
