Recycling threat pushes electronic industry into action

An electronics industry working group has been set up by the Centre for the Exploitation of Science and Technology (CEST) to study recycling options for used electronic equipment in advance of possible EC legislation.

"The electronics industry is under legislative threat," according to a new report from CEST.1 A law just proposed in Germany would oblige retailers of electronic equipment to take back and dispose of used items at their own expense. The Dutch also seem likely to place recycling responsibilities on industry. CEST anticipates that similar EC legislation will follow in 1994.
