New rules will define "controlled waste"

Revised regulations defining what is "controlled waste" will be brought into force throughout Britain on 1 April following a short consultation exercise initiated by the Government on 27 January.1 The rules will mean that two different legal definitions of "controlled waste" will be operating in parallel in England and Wales for at least 12 months.

The new definitions are contained in draft regulations accompanied by a draft circular. They will prescribe what is meant by household, commercial and industrial waste for various purposes under Part II of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
