EC begins examination of car recycling options

Cars have become the EC's third priority waste stream. A major examination was launched by the European Commission last month in collaboration with industrial interests to identify options for improved management of wastes generated by the millions of cars scrapped within the Community each year.

The collaborative programme is the third to be initiated by the Commission under a new "priority waste stream" approach to waste management. This began in 1990 with two studies on waste tyres and halogenated hydrocarbons (ENDS Report 191, pp 33-4).
