Polystyrene recycling plant opens

A recycling plant for domestic and fast-food packaging made from polystyrene has been opened by polystyrene producer Linpac Plastics International. The plant is the first in Europe to recycle post-consumer waste.

Recycling of expanded polystyrene has been slow to develop because of its voluminous nature and extrusion problems. Plasgreen overcame this with its compaction machine (ENDS Report 201, p 4). Transit packaging is now being recycled in Plasgreen's new 4,000 tonnes per year plant in Bury.

Linpac, working with Cogran Reclamation, has just opened a 2,500 tonnes per year facility near Macclesfield to wash, sort, compact and extrude polystyrene
