Rules on transfrontier shipment of radioactive waste

The EC's first rules on the transfrontier shipment of radioactive waste will come into force by 1 January 1994 under a new Euratom Directive.1

In broad terms, the Directive applies the same principles to radioactive waste which have applied since 1984 to trans-frontier shipments of hazardous waste.

Separate regulatory regimes are established for shipments between Member States and those into or out of the Community.
