Chemical industry leads talks on voluntary environmental reporting

The chemical industry's European federation, CEFIC, has opened talks on voluntary environmental reporting with other industry associations in an effort to avert mandatory EC disclosure rules. Discussions between CEFIC and the European Commission about a voluntary reporting pact have been suspended in recent weeks but are expected to resume early in 1994. But there is still considerable uncertainty about what legal status any voluntary agreement might have, as well as a lack of consensus within the chemical industry about how environmental data should be communicated to the public.
