Body Shop sets precedent with pledge on renewable energy

The Body Shop, the "green" cosmetics and toiletries retailer, has become the first UK company to vow to offset its carbon dioxide emissions by investing in renewable energy. The pledge was made as it published one of the most detailed corporate environmental reports issued in the UK to date.

The Body Shop began greening its image with a series of good housekeeping initiatives in 1986 and sponsoring environmental displays in its stores (ENDS Report 136, pp 13-15). In 1991, it won an award from integrating environmental concerns into its operations (ENDS Report 194, p 4). The company's venture into wind energy will keep it at the forefront of the environmental agenda for business.
