HMIP, power generators at loggerheads over IPC

National Power's hopes of burning the new fuel Orimulsion at two power stations without having to install flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment appear to be receding. The company has been told by HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP) that it has one last chance to prove that FGD is too expensive, or face an instant decision which will almost certainly go against it. The dispute over the issue is the latest sign of a growing irritation at HMIP about what it regards as the uncooperative attitude of the two main electricity generators towards integrated pollution control.
