ReChem told to upgrade Pontypool incinerator

Two improvement notices have been served on ReChem International by HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP) ordering major improvements at its hazardous waste incinerator in Pontypool. The work will cost £2.5 million.

The notices were served in April under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The first requires the company to install a third electrostatic precipitator to reduce particulate emissions from the stack. The work must be completed by 31 December 1992.

The second notice demands extensive modification of the front end of the incineration process by 31 May 1993. At present, waste is charged to the static hearth incinerator by a front-loading
