Manchester firms warned of crackdown on duty of care

Suspicions that many smaller waste producers are ill-prepared to comply with the new "duty of care" have been fortified by serious fly-tipping incidents involving chemical waste in the Manchester area.

The duty of care came into force on 1 April. The new rules oblige waste producers and other parties in the waste management chain to take reasonable steps to prevent the unlicensed disposal of waste, prevent its escape from control, and ensure its transfer to an authorised person (ENDS Report 204, pp 29-30 ).
