EC eco-labelling criteria drafted for washing machines

A delay in the launch of the EC's eco-labelling scheme now looks inevitable due to difficulties in agreeing environmental criteria for some high-profile products which were to feature in its first phase. But criteria for washing machines and dishwashers have virtually been finalised, and look set to put pressure on most UK producers to emulate the environmental achievements of their European competitors.

The European Commission had been hoping to launch the eco-labelling scheme in October with an initial 10-12 product groups (ENDS Report 205, p 21 ).
