Rising trend in environmental assessments

The number of environmental statements submitted to planning authorities has shown a year-by-year increase since the 1985 EC Directive on environmental assessment of major projects was brought into force in mid-1988, according to three parliamentary answers given in May.1

The figures provide up-to-date confirmation of what was evident from initial surveys of the impact of the EC Directive (ENDS Reports 194, p 5, and 199, pp 12-15) - that the Government's belief that it would result in the preparation of only a "few dozen" environmental statements annually was a significant underestimate.
