NRA, DoE criticised for wasting taxpayers' money

The National Rivers Authority (NRA) and the Department of the Environment (DoE) have been taken to task by the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee for mismanagement which resulted in a huge cost overrun on the NRA's new headquarters.1 But both will be relieved that the full extent of the scandal was not unearthed by the inquiry.

The hearing which brought the affair into the open was summarised in last month's edition (ENDS Report 207, p 25 ). The Committee discovered that the cost of the NRA's new offices in Bristol had been allowed to rise from £1 million to £2.65 million without its Board being informed.
