DoE guide on selection of waste management options

A revised version of the 1976 Waste Management Paper on waste treatment and disposal options was published by the Department of the Environment (DoE) on 13 May.1 The new edition gives substantially more prominence than its predecessor to options other than landfilling.

The 1976 version gave landfill pride of place in the UK's waste management hierarchy, with only a limited role being envisaged for techniques such as incineration and composting.

A draft revision issued for consultation by the DoE last November, on the other hand, saw considerable promise in anaerobic digestion and other treatment methods for municipal waste, particularly as landfill costs rise in the future with tighter design and engine
