Research programme hints at Brussels' thinking on waste policy

An invitation to tender for 15 research contracts in the waste management field has been issued by the European Commission.1 The scope of the studies gives some useful insights into the Commission's thinking on new issues for the EC's waste management policy.

The contracts are likely to be awarded this summer. Most will run for 6-12 months. Among the research topics are:

  • Life-cycle analysis of packaging: The Commission is looking for an evaluation and comparison of the methodologies, contents and conclusions of the packaging LCAs carried out to date. The findings may be used to inform the next but one stage of its packaging policy, once the forthcoming proposal on packaging waste m
