FoE launches "sewer rats" campaign

Friends of the Earth (FoE) opened up a new campaigning front on 24 July by issuing a "top 100" list of companies with consents to discharge the largest amounts of metals to sewer. The group's objectives are to persuade the Government to introduce legislation establishing public registers of firms' actual discharges, and tighter control of trade effluents.

The new campaign is the fruit of a massive research programme. Over the past few months, FoE's staff have visited most of the ten sewerage undertakers' regional offices to extract information on thousands of trade effluent consents. The companies' public registers include only the consents themselves, and contain no monitoring data.
