Car producers submit recycling proposals

The Automotive Consortium on Recycling and Disposal (ACORD) has submitted plans to the Government on how to increase the recycling of the 1.5 million cars scrapped in the UK each year. The plans entail reuse and recycling where economic, followed by incineration of the remainder to recover its energy value.

ACORD was set up in February under the auspices of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders following a report by the Centre for the Exploitation of Science and Technology (CEST) (ENDS Report 205, p 12 ). Its main goal is to develop a recycling strategy in response to the threat of EC legislation.
