BSO/Origin: Putting a price tag on environmental damage

Environmental performance reporting by businesses is still very much in its infancy. The pioneers have mostly concentrated on publishing quantitative data on their releases to the environment - but the Dutch company BSO/Origin is now in the second year of an experiment in calculating and making public the financial costs of its environmental impacts.

There can have been few company annual reports which opened with a 14-page essay on the imperative need for business to devise environmentally more sustainable practices and the accompanying need for companies to develop ecological accounts.
