DoE on the spot over air pollution permits

The first official figure for the total number of applications for authorisation submitted by the initial batch of industries subject to local authority air pollution control has come in way below Government expectations.

Parliament was told last year that the Department of the Environment (DoE) had expected applications for 4,600-4,800 industrial processes, as well as for anything between 2,000 and 15,000 waste oil burners, in "block 1" of the new controls. Regulations under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 required operators of these processes to submit applications to local authorities between 1 April and 30 September last year.
