  • A novel system for reed-bed treatment of leachate, developed by Portsmouth Polytechnic, is to be built at Caird's Bennett Bank landfill site in Barrow-in-Furness. The leachate will be applied direct to the roots of the reeds growing in a gravel bed, increasing the efficiency of the hydroponic aeration. The technique is widely used in Eygpt for growing reeds.
