"Green" claims for water, foam, light bulbs criticised

Complaints about "green" claims to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) show little sign of abating. The ASA's latest collection of rulings includes a verdict in favour of Friends of the Earth (FoE) in the latest stage of its battle with the water industry over the quality of drinking water, and decisions against a light bulb supplier and insulation foam producer.

FoE's complaint to the ASA followed an advertisement in Water Bulletin by the Water Services Association (WSA). Headed "it's not the first time we've had to defend our water from foreign attack", the advertisement was placed in response to a preliminary judgement by the Advocate-General of the European Court of Justice that the UK was not in full compliance with the EC standard for nitrate in drinking water.
