Guide on environmental performance indicators

Guidelines to help companies measure their environmental performance were launched by Business in the Environment (BiE) on 29 September.1 They are intended to assist businesses both to reinforce their internal environmental management systems, and to respond effectively to the growing demands for disclosure of performance data from customers, shareholders, investors and environmental groups.

Until now, says BiE, "companies may just have been able to satisfy their audiences with simple statements of intent in their environmental reports, but there are increasing demands for quantified information - unquantified environmental reports are likely to become as unacceptable in future as unquantified financial reports."
