Detergents and cleaners top green products league

Manufacturers of household detergents and cleaners appear to be making the biggest efforts to develop "environment-friendly" consumer goods, according to an eight-country survey of product claims by the market research group Mintel International.1 But the proliferation of environmental claims is probably compounding the difficulties facing consumers in selecting products with the smallest environmental impacts.

Mintel's report is based on a survey of claims made on products which were on sale in a sample of 4-6 retail stores in each of eight countries. These were Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK and the USA.

The largest numbers of products bearing environmental claims were available in the USA, followed by the five northern European countries. Lower levels of consumer and business awareness of environmental issues
