Data on radioactive wastes kept out of local registers

The Government has back-tracked on a commitment to make data on official monitoring of radioactive discharges available to the public via local registers. Instead, the information will only be available at five Government offices.

The disclosure arrangements are set out in a Department of the Environment (DoE) circular on the Radioactive Substances Act 1960.1 This was amended by the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to provide for public access to a much wider range of information on sites with authorisations or registrations under the 1960 Act in respect of the keeping or discharge of radioactive materials.
