Texts of EC rules on habitats, environment fund, chemicals trade

The official texts of several items of environmental legislation agreed by EC Ministers earlier this year are now available. The most important is a Directive which will establish a Community network of conservation areas to protect natural habitats and wild flora and fauna. A major reform of the EC's arrangements for funding environmental projects has also been completed, and the text of a Regulation governing the trade in dangerous chemicals has been finalised.

The new legislation covers:

  • Habitat and species conservation: The EC's main contribution to nature conservation until now has been the 1979 Directive on birds and their habitats. The new Directive amounts to a recognition that there is a Community interest in the conservation of flora and fauna generally, and that a prerequisite for this is the protection of their habitats.
