This year's Hydro Award for achievement in water quality improvement was presented to Kalsep for its Fibrotex depth filter by Norsk Hydro (UK). Fibrotex is a self-cleaning fibrous depth filter that removes 98% of particles down to 2mm from potable water. In particular the filter can remove cryptosporidial oocysts which are typically 4 to 6mm in diameter. In tests using sand filtered backwashings spiked with 103 oocysts per litre no oocysts were detected in the filtrate. Other award winners included Albright & Wilson for a technology that reduces heavy metal discharges from its Whitehaven plant (ENDS Report 210, p4).
