EC targets for SO2 and NOx met ahead of time

The UK is well on course to meet the initial emission targets for sulphur and nitrogen oxides set by the 1988 EC Directive on large combustion plants, according to figures released by the Department of the Environment (DoE) on 20 November.

The Directive contains emission targets which apply to existing combustion plants with a capacity of 50MWth or more. For the UK, the targets are a 20%, 40% and 60% reduction in SO2 emissions by 1993, 1998 and 2003, respectively. The reductions for NOx are 15% and 30%, to be achieved by 1993 and 1998, respectively. The baseline year from which the reductions are calculated is 1980.
