Energy labels for household appliances

A framework Directive paving the way for the introduction of mandatory energy labelling for household appliances has been adopted by the EC Council.1 The European Commission is understood to be contemplating a rating system to enable consumers to choose one manufacturer's product over another's on the basis of their energy efficiency scores.

The Directive, which Member States are to bring force by January 1994, marks a new bid to introduce mandatory labelling standards within the EC after abortive efforts initiated many years ago.
