HMIP tries again to clean up smokeless fuel plant

A renewed effort to control excessive emissions from a smokeless fuel plant near Coventry has been launched by HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP). Notices requiring the installation of a particulate filter and the submission of an improvement programme were served on the operator, British Coal subsidiary Coal Products Ltd (CPL), in December.

HMIP's move follows severe local criticism of its failure to bring particulate emissions from the plant consistently below 100mg/m3, in accordance with the terms of an improvement notice issued in June 1991. The notice - the third since 1988 - lapsed in November after CPL completed the specified improvement work, even though this has failed to bring the plant into compliance with the 100mg/m3 limit on a routine basis (END
