BMW opens first car dismantling plant

BMW's first plant to dismantle used cars has opened in Bolney, West Sussex. The venture has not been greeted with undisguised enthusiasm by other manufacturers, who want to build up a network of recycling facilities which accept all models and makes of cars.

An estimated 1.4 million cars are scrapped each year in the UK. The metal content is largely recycled but the remainder is mostly landfilled or incinerated.

BMW has announced plans for recycling the 16,000 BMWs scrapped each year (ENDS Report 198, p 12). After opening its first dismantling plant this year, it is aiming for a second in 1993 and another five in 1994, with the total being increased to 10-15 by the end of 1995.
