PVC report highlights difficulties in LCA comparisons

It is difficult to find a scientific basis for regarding PVC as a more environmentally harmful material than most alternatives, according to a report by PVC producer Norsk Hydro.1 But the study also underlines how environmental comparisons between products are fraught with pitfalls.

The report was compiled in response to the growing trend in northern Europe countries to phase out PVC, especially from packaging.

In Switzerland, the use of PVC in beverage containers was banned in 1991. In the Netherlands, supermarkets have been phasing out PVC over the last two years.
