Containment failure costs National Grid £5,000

Faulty bunding arrangements have once again resulted in a prosecution by the National Rivers Authority (NRA) - the National Grid Company (NGC) being the culprit this time.

Water pollution incidents caused by defective bunds around chemical and oil storage tanks have prompted several NRA prosecutions in the past two years - the most striking being a surfactant spill in Manchester which caused foaming along six kilometres of river (ENDS Report 208, pp 39-40 ).
