Dairy Crest has become the first Welsh business to suffer from the stricter penalties introduced by the Environmental Protection Act 1990 for water pollution offences. The Act raised the maximum fine on summary conviction from £2,000 to £20,000. In a case brought by the National Rivers Authority in April, the company was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay £825 costs for polluting a tributary of the river Dee at Marchwi
