Chemical manufacturer Rhone-Poulenc has been fined £20,000 and ordered to pay £8,049 costs after exposing employees to a cloud of toluene. The gas escaped from its Norwich plant last June after an employee started a distillation process without realising that a compressor was not on-line. The conviction follows a fine of £21,500 in 1989 for two other offences under the Health and Safety Act.
